Report from the meeting of 27 October, 2011

South Ayrshire Access Panel meets on the last Thursday in each month and tackles issues relating to making the environment, facilities and services in South Ayrshire available to all its residents.

A member of the public had contacted the Panel regarding parking facilities in Fort Street in Ayr and was asking for advice. She reported that there are no disabled bays from the bus station to the beach and that there are 2 motorcycle bays between Fort Street and Charlotte Street that causes noise problems day and night. She has been given the name of the Panel's contact at SAC.

Although there were no new planning applications put to the Panel this month, someone did contact the Panel about a ramp behind the war memorial at Walker Hall in Troon. There are no handrails or ramp here, A Panel member stated that it would be ok to place a wooden platform there for the time being.

The next Inclusive Design Awareness Seminar will take place on 20 November 2011. The conference will be held approx 13 – 16 February (still to be confirmed). Last year’s seminar was a huge success and going by questionnaires that were completed last year, the seminar will hold the same workshops. This s a great way to encourage designers/architects/builders to stop to think about disabled people before designing things.

After the Panel complained to Stagecoach about the state of the road with pot holes and no tactile paving, works have been under way to try to fix this. A Panel member agreed to do a final inspection and reported that all work is complete apart from tactile paving but said it makes a huge difference. This will be chased up.

The Panel have decided to do an audit on Burns Museum after coming across various issues inside and outside the building. This will be looked at again in the New Year.

Lorraine Cord invited the Panel members to the Carlton for a Christmas meal on Wednesday 14 December 2011. If anyone is interested who was not at the meeting, please contact Lorraine Cord.
