Report from the meeting of 27 March 2008
South Ayrshire Access Panel meets on the last Thursday in each month and tackles issues relating to making the environment, facilities and services in South Ayrshire available to all its residents.
The Panel received a letter from SDEF regarding a new event: an annual award in memory of Elma Mitchell. It is a competition with a £500 prize for the best essay submitted by young people with their thoughts concerning disabled people.
On-going planning considerations for the Panel this month include: disabled car parking at Aviation House, Glasgow Prestwick Airport, disabled access to Crossbie Tower, South Beach, Troon, accissible parking spaces at Floyds Hotel, Ayr, accessible toilets at the Balgarth Hotel, Ayr, level access to main entrances at premises in Marina Road, Prestwick, proposed footpath adjacent to Townend House, Symington to prevent pedestrians having to walk on to the road at this point, level access to premises at James Street, Tarbolton.
Panel members were pleased to note that the Pavements are for People campaign seems to be working. A policeman advised that shopkeepers are responsible for keeping pavements clear.
It was felt that there should be representatives form Social Work and the hearing-impaired community on the Panel. Invitations to this effect will be sent.
