Report from the meeting of 25 June 2009

South Ayrshire Access Panel meets on the last Thursday in each month and tackles issues relating to making the environment, facilities and services in South Ayrshire available to all its residents.

SDEF has brought to The Panel's attention a campaign to stop the development of Shared Surface Streets in Scotland because of safety concerns expressed by many disabled groups.

With regard to the Golf Open at Turnberry, the Panel were informed that access for disabled people is very good this year, but, since it is on a first come, first served basis, going early for a good spot is recommended. A bus is available to take the public from the carpark to the 18th hole which will be appreciated since it is a fair distance to walk.

Regarding Girvan Railway Station Booking Hall, the Panel’s view is that both the original BR and the SAYLSA proposals provided solutions to problems which may arise for wheelchair using passengers buying a ticket, but that the SAYLSA proposal had the additional advantage of not adversely affecting the appearance of the booking hall.

South Ayrshire Council raised concerns about the number of cigarette ends being dropped around the centre of Ayr and wondered about providing bins specifically for the disposal of these. The Panel felt that they would have to be carefully placed so as not to create further hazzards to people with a disability.
