Report from the meeting of 25 February 2010

South Ayrshire Access Panel meets on the last Thursday in each month and tackles issues relating to making the environment, facilities and services in South Ayrshire available to all its residents.

By invitation, George Brown attended the meeting for the last time as Access Officer due to his retirement from South Ayrshire Council.

The Odeon Cinema in Ayr is to be made aware that the accessible toilet requires an alarm cord.

If the Panel has any queries or questions regarding planning or e-planning issues, they should e-mail the Planning Department.

With regard to the crossing in Hillfoot Road, Ayr, notices of intention have been attached to lamp posts near the site and tenders for the work have been sent to the Council all indicating that the work may be starting soon.

A Panel member suggested that maybe taxis could improve their service by texting or calling the customer when the taxi is outside their house as sometimes it was difficult to hear the taxi sounding its horn.

An awareness of equalities meeting was held at Ayr College on 29 January 2010 between 10am – 4pm. Panel members reported that it was an interesting meeting, especially one workshop concerning the work of Guide Dogs.

The 4 Ayrshire Panels meeting will take place on 17 March 2010 at Ayr Citadel from 2pm – 4pm. It is hoped that there will be a good attendence.

A Panel member informed the Panel that a group of people who have MS meet in Dobbies Garden Centre in Ayr on the last Wednesday of each month. They said it is an enjoyable meeting and allows people to socialise.

The Chairperson took the opportunity at the end of the meeting to make a presentation to George Brown who has retired from SAC. He thanked George for all his help over the years and all the other members of the Access Panel added their appreciation. George will be a huge loss to the Panel but he said that he would make himself available if the Panel needed his assistance.
